IS THE NUTS REALLY THE NUTS?

Most Pot Limit Omaha players know that Omaha is a game of "the nuts." In a multi-way pot, the winning hand is more often than not the best possible hand out there. When you start with four cards, you have six different possible two-card hands. This increases the chances that someone is holding the nuts. What many beginning Pot Limit Omaha players do not understand is that Omaha is really a game of redraws.

A redraw means that after the flop, you not only have some kind of made hand, you also have draws to a better hand. Having redraws in Pot Limit Omaha is so important that it is sometimes mathematically correct to fold the nuts on the flop. For example: suppose you raise in the late position with Ac Kh Tc 9h -- a very good starting Omaha hand. Two players call and you see the flop three-handed. The flop comes 6d 7s 8s. You've flopped the nut straight, which is the best hand possible at the moment. The problem is that you have absolutely no chance to improve your hand. This is as good as it gets. This may be okay if both of your opponents check to you. But if one opponent makes a pot sized bet and the next one makes a pot sized raise, then what do you do? How can you fold the nuts?

If one of your opponents has flopped a set, and the other player -- or possibly even the same player -- has a flush draw, you are almost a 2-1 dog to win the pot. If one of those opponents has the same straight as you with a flush draw as well, or a wrap to a higher straight (such as 9,T,J), your hand is even worse because you can only win half the pot even if you don't lose to a flush or full house. You have to ask yourself what your opponents would possibly be betting and raising with on this flop. If there is a chance that all of the redraws are out against you, then you should always fold. If both of your opponents check and either one is tricky enough to be capable of a check raise, then you should still check this flop. If a blank comes on the turn - the 3c for instance -- your hand will be much stronger. Keep in mind, though, that if all of those draws are still out against you, even now you're not much better than 50% to win this pot.

Having multiple redraws to the nuts is much better in Omaha than having the best hand at the moment. Lay this hand down and save your chips for use in a better spot.

PLAYED BY THE TEXT BOOK AND GOT BEAT

That right so now I going to have a big BONFIRE with all my poker books after how I played on line last night. The game was paying 10 places. I was the second short stack with 4500 in chips. The blinds were 600 and 1200. I was in first position with ace,ace,2,queen double suit in high low omaha. The big blind was all in with 531 in chips so I made my move and went all-in hopefully to move everyone out and pick up a few chips off of the small blind but I got one caller. My deuce was counterfeited on the flop along with pair of 10'. This gave me two pair aces and 10's with no low. I was beat by 3 10's by the only caller knocking me out one position from the money. So don't try to sell me any more books!!!!

Just Thinking

I guess we all have done that many times. Suppose you were not able to think what would life be like. We all have thoughts good and bad. Poker is a nice way of changing your line of thinking from bad to maybe good things. A lot of older people become depressed from lack of thing to do. Our health prevent us from doing a lot things we like to do but unable to them because our bodies like the ability to preform Hopefully our mind can always be active and playing poker is a nice way for me to keep mine active. Yes there is a lots of other thing I love to do but unable to do them anymore. As a closing message to you younger people take care of yourself and when you become older like me then you will appreciate that you did. Appreciate the good thing in your life and when you do become older then you will have good memories. Ole Pokers Players never died they just muck thier hands.

Bragging Rights

It appears my attendance at the World Poker Conference has given my Omaha game a new life. I have finish 1st in one tournament and place in the money 5 other times in just three days.. All of these except one were at the final table. I only played a total 8 games. Winning at Omaha has a lot of strategy involved but the number one thing is to get in with the right starting hands. When you have the right starting hand then it is time to increase the pot and reduce the number of players by betting or raising. This is what the professional do. The Omaha game is a fast growing game and we all need to start learning everything we can and faster the better. The quicker you learn the more money you are going make due to the large number of player that don't understand the game but they love to play and they will play to many hands and here where you can win extra money base upon their weakness to play too many hands. Hand selection is one of Omaha players most critical skills. You can find these hand ranking in the links in the left side of this site. Read them and study them so you know this hand at a glance. Too many become confused after the flop trying to figure out the status of their hand. If you did not make your hand on the flop or looking for a nut draw you should muck your hand. I not able to seat here and write everything about what you should know about Omaha but I hope I can stir your interest enough that you will buy books and other materials to help you to be a better player. There a lot good info on the web if you will take the time to look and study what you find. My little research down on the left where the links are is just a scratch of the surface of what out there to help you improve your game. Believe me and take my word for it OMAHA is going to be the game of the future. It is fast becoming a new star in the Poker World. Be smart get a head start on everyone else and polish up your skills and became a consistent winner!!

Just some Thoughts

This audio thing is real new to me and I going to love trying it out. I guess I am suppose to talk about myself heck I do that all the time. Ok I will try to get serious and say something that is important. Well I guess that ended that conversation since i probably don't do anything that important anymore except play Poker. At my age and with my few health problem I am really not able to do anything else since I am a COPD person and have to use oxgen a lot. At one time loved to write but I was never real good at it but my problem now is finding the keys, oh I know where they are but hitting the right ones is my problem. Thank goodness for spell checks. To give me something to do I decided to start an informal web page about poker and so far I have really enjoy doing it. I have been getting some help and advice from others that has got us this far. I am inviting others to join as member so that can contribute their experiences and/or knownledge to my web page to make it more enjoyable I hope. I grew up on a farm and I can remember when neighbors and friends pitched in and help with the harvest and it has a real life saver. I server 9 years in the U.S.Marines and my up bringing on the farm help out there also. For several years after getting out of the service I was in Sales & Marketing as a supervisor and/or district manager for several large companies. One day I got feed up with corporate America and left these inappreciative companies where you were only a number. I purchase myself a small ranch in Arkansas at the ripe age of 47. It was hard work but I loved every minute (almost) until physically I was unable to attend and work my cattle. I left and move to Mesquite NV for the nice climate that was real good for my ailments. I love to gamble and they had two casino here and that was right down my alley. Being a rancher I was already used to being a gambler. Lots of folk do not realize how big a gamble farming and ranching really is. From the time you plant a seed or have a calf born everyday after is depended upon many factors to numerous to mentions. As a child I saw lot of families lose everything from a hail storm and destroy a whole years crop and unable to make their payment to the bank. There many other things that nature can cause havoc with farm family incomes. So gamble is nothing new to me but I respect it and manage my money accordingly. Money management is probably is where many people have their problems with gambling. Poker is a game that requires you to think (although many online players don't) and this is good for us older folks like myself to keep our brain functioning. Poker attracts people from all kinds of backgrounds that can contribute to some nice social event at poker tables. Due to some abuse by a few some will say gambling is bad. I will say that there is always some abuse in almost every thing that people do. Now I sound like a preacher rather then as an International Professional Poker Players. So until next time I hope you pots will be huge and your fun will be much greater.

COUNTERFEIT

NO, I am not going to tell you how to counterfeit money, but only how to make money. In Omaha Hi/Lo8 we hear how I got counterfeited and I lost the hand. When I started playing Omaha Hi/Lo8 it was some time before I UNDERSTOOD WHAT COUNTERFEITED CARDS WERE. An easy example is this scenario: You have an ace, two, 9 and a ten in your hand. The flop comes 2,3,king, then you do not have a chance of making a low because your 2 pairs the 2 on the board. Anytime one of the low cards in your hand matches one on the board, that is known as a counterfeited card. The part that is hard to understand by many players is that the 2 can be used by all other players in the hand. You have a pair of 2's that can be used in the high hand but not in the low. It is always nice to have three low cards so as to have what I call a backup card in case I get counterfeited on one of my cards. A word of caution although you can not make a low if the 4 comes on the turn and the 5 on the river, you now can make a wheel (straight). The 2 can be used for the high hand and this situation does happen frequently. Also if a jack came on the turn and the queen on the river you would have an ace high straight. The next important thing to remember to play hands that are double suited. More hands are won by flushes then straights. Any time you make a straight or a flush and there is a pair on the board be careful because this creates a great opportunity for a full house. That majority of Omaha hands are made on the river. If you flop a good hand your best bet is to bet it strong and run your opponents out before they out draw you at the river. You have to remember every time a card is turned up it usually improves someone's hand due the large number of combinations that can be made in Omaha. Slow playing Omaha will get you killed. See you at the poker cemetery.

Omaha Hi/Lo Questions

Many players are asking why are there more low hands than high hands in a omaha game. The question is fairly easy to answer but with a lot of reservation without any definite answer. Ok let's look at the low hand which uses a total of 32 cards. This in it self makes it obvious why there are more low hands. I know you are going to say there are 52 cards that can be used make a high hand. In a low hand you are able to use any combinations of 32 cards and to make a high hand you have to make specific combination of cards such as pairs, sets, straight, flushes, full houses and most of you know the rest of hands needed to win. Low hands can be put together like a Shotgun pattern where high hands are more like rifle shots. So if you are a poor shooter then you have more of chance of hitting your target with a shotgun shot. What I have just said is why you will see a lot more in-experienced players in omaha games because they feel they have a better chance of winning against good players. Omaha is a very exciting game, which is another reason that you are seeing more and more omaha players on the internet games. Omaha is a very demanding game that requires your full attention at all times and you have to stay focused on the many combinations (40) of hands you can make. Starting hands are very important and there is a link under interesting places to visit, which will give an line up that you can use for a guide. I do not consider myself a top omaha player. I just take advantage of those that do not understand the game. You want to have fun play OMAHA.

On day five of the Oasis Open Poker tournament in Mesquite NV we finally made into the money. After over eight hours of play we capture 7th place that made us very proud of the way we played. This event is held twice a years and every year this event has set new records for the number of player. This tournament has a nice mix of different type of poker games that help intice all different types of players. The Oasis Open is known for treating its player with extras that other casino poker rooms do not. These were the comment I heard from player for six days about how well the poker room was treating them. Jan fisher from Card Player Cruises was the official host and she does an excellent job of promoting and directing poker tournament. We had planned an live interview with her but unfotunately our audio server was down so we all really missed out and I am very sorry this happen but it was out of my control. Hopeful in the new future we will hear from Jan and pass on to you some of her poker knowledge to you. Mesquite is only 75 miles north of Las Vegas and many player come here to our quiet town to get away from the rat race of the big city and relax and enjoy the quiet and peaceful small town serenity. Locally we have four tournament a week they are helded on Sunday (3PM),Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (6PM) PST. BOOKS

There are a lot of books on poker out there right now. All of these books talk about patience. You can see that if someone were to play every single hand in a Texas Hold 'en game, they would get massacred. So, in poker, the number one rule for amateurs is "Patience is a virtue." Learn what the strong hands are, and learn to throw away the really tempting sort of junky type of hands, like 7-9 of clubs. Tempting as the 7-9 of clubs may be, it's like a potato chip; once you eat one chip, you can't stop eating, and once you start playing "junk" hands in poker, you can't stop playing them. I personally have read very few books. Patience sounds like a big word but my opinion it is low in content. The big word is PRACTICE and this one is where most of us are short on. This is the virtue that I like to possess at lot of. I believe in practice makes prefect. All Sport player practice practice and more practice to excel in their field. Poker players have to do the same just reading books is not going to get you to the level that will see yourself at final tables in tournaments. Over the many years (to many to mention) I have learned more from other players then any book that ever been written. When playing poker you always have to be in the game even when you have folded and this is where patience plays an important part of your game. What I have just said is important not getting up from table when you are not in hand is going to make you a loser in the long run (what about those pockets ace's that you have been patiently waiting for when your hand was auto muck. Of all the poker theory I have heard about all these years just what it is theory (Hypothesis, guess). Nothing will beat hands on experience and you will get plenty chances of GUESSING. Patience in the long run will normally prevail if you have had enough practice!

FROM THE BIG RUSH DOWN TO THE SLUSH

That right the first half of this month was really great but the second half I have been bogged down in the old nasty muddy poker slush.  You know what I am saying because everyone has these times.  Playing good with good card but just not quite good enough (second best) that eats up your chips.  Sometime  I feel like a blind man standing  on the corner trying to sell some pencils but nobody  write with pencils anymore so guess what I go home empty handed.    To break this cycle and get out of the slush is  difficult to figure out how  to make the needed changes.  I have no real answer for this one no more then did I have one for how to get the big RUSH.  The real nice thing about this situation is that the RUSH has put me ahead for the month.   We currently are working very hard on earning a seat in the next WPT in LA.   To go to the Bicycle Poker Room and play in the WPT for me would be my first choice of all of the WPT.  It a short distance from where I live and since I depend upon oxygen part of the  time  it would fit in  real  well with my situation.  If you have not tried Paradise Poker.com .  I would recomend  them.   Many of their Satellite are FREE.   THIS WEEKEND I WILL BE PLAYING A SATELLITE FOR A TRIP TO LONDON  WITH THREE TOP FEMALE MODELS IN THE WORLD.  They sended me a nice shirt and cap and other goodie just because I had won some events.  The site is easy to get around in and there enough variety of events to keep anyone busy.  I tried about 8 to 10 and this is my favorite and I play no other now.   Well I going to go and wash off the slush and play some more poker.

KEEP GOING DOWN THERE IS MORE.  I HAVE NOT FIGURED OUT WHAT HAPPEN TO ALL THIS BLANK SPACE BUT I AM SURE SOMEONE WILL TELL WHAT I DID WRONG.  MAYBE IT THERE SO YOU CAN PAUSE AND THINK FOR A MINUTE.  What do you know, I fixed it.  When there is a will there always a way.

THE BIG RUSH

Last evening I experienced the POKER RUSH. The adrenaline was in full flow and ANY opponent at my table that got in my way I just simply ran over them. This was one of those times that you not only got good hands but you picked the right opportunity to push your bets to move players out of your way. The results was that I placed 4th in the 9PM omaha tournament that ended up at 11:45PM. I was really feeling that rush so I signed up for the midnight omaha and after 2 hours and 35 minutes I ended up taking first place. After these two wins and at 3AM I was still wide awake and had to watch television to unwind and fall asleep. When you have this POKER RUSH you fear no other player because for some reason you are able to figure out everything in your favor. The big secret to all of this is how do you obtain this rush in the first place. If we knew how to turn this highly powerful substance on we would become one of those IPPP players. If you have the secret formula to receive the very powerful stuff called THE POKER RUSH please pass it on to me in my comment section. Until I receive that RUSH that's all until next time!

SMALL SMALL POKER WORLD

Recently one evening I decided to play a little Omaha on line with only 88 players. This is a small number in comparison to most on line tournament games. This night was very unusual because out of 88 players world-wide three of these player at MY table were from my town and not only that they all play at the same casino that I do. Now that is what I call a small small world. It is interesting to see players address's from all over the world. You never know they maybe next door or thousands of miles away.
I am now claiming a new title for myself. I am doing this since I have won several tournaments and placed in the money in many others to numerous to count. I am now declaring myself as a INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL POKER PLAYER (IPPP). Now does that look professional or not. Playing in a brick & mortar tournament with a few tables is KID's stuff. Do you want to be a real poker player then jump onto the internet and try your poker skills with some of the best in the world. You may think I am joking and pulling your leg but I am dead serious if you want to play some big time poker on a shoe string BUDGET. What are you waiting for? I am backing these statements up WITH proof of the number of on-line players now that have made it to the BIG money BRICK & MORTAR tournament. I personally played one night against a player that won the SAT (that I finished 5th) and he went on to win $275,000 at WSOP. So what are you waiting for to get yourself into the real poker world that has become very small. The real nice thing is no matter what budget you are on there is always a game for YOU!! If you are a beginner or a professional or just a lousy amateur like myself there is room for everyone. Please don't forget my new title is "IPPP"!!

POKER Brain Food

Examining why you play poker could be the official start of a broader self-examination of all your motivations. Psychological self-examination of any kind will not be easy. The payoff is that efforts aimed at self-understanding will always improve the quality of your life.

At a minimum, examining specifically why you play poker will help you begin to understand yourself. This is an essential first step in understanding others. Understanding yourself and others can only help improve your overall poker results.

Why do I play poker? Competition? Money? Ego? Mental gymnastics? Social life? Perhaps it's a combination of these qualities. As a phiosopher once wrote (Emerson, I think) "An un-examined life isn't worth living." As I examine my poker play, I become more conscious of behaviors that motivate me and help me understand why I do what I do. Poker seems like a microcosm of life. Games are filled with fear, disappointments, exhilarations, losses, victories, mood swings, sportmanship, rude behaviors, and the gamut of other emotions found in humankind. While playing poker, one is constantly making snap decisions that determine success or failure. As I continue along the path of self examination, I realize that not only does my poker improve, but my relationships with others are more satisfying. Ask yourselves why you play this wonderful game called poker and perhaps it will help you "Know thyself" a little better.

Above reflect my true feeling about poker and it side effect on your every day outlook. When you reach the upper age you need something that keep you interested and busy and poker is the right thing for me. I can enjoy poker from the leisure of my home and don't have to worry about the DUI's. What more can a man (or woman) want without all the other hassle that go with preparing to go to town. Don't get me wrong I still like playing live poker tournments also just to listen to other players complaining about their bad luck. It is a good change of pace to endure the torture of complaining player and to come out on top. Poker player are like no other gamblers and this is what make them a uniqe breed. For 30 long years I played a no brainer Keno game but it was a good socializing form of gambling but you do not interact with other players as you do in poker. It appears now with all the publicity that this old time sport is finally catching up with some national recognition. A liitle skill and a lot's of luck and with some good fortitude can make you a above average player. See ya at the tables.

OMAHA HI/LO

I don't know why they call this game omaha maybe because it started in Kansas, well if that is the case they should named it Abilene Texas after a real wild place. Anyway after saying all of that I going to say that Omaha is becoming one of my favorite games. I have won two multi online in the past couple of weeks and placed in the money several more times. My secret of playing the game is first be double suited with high card or have four cards below sixs and be double suited. For example, one of my big hands recently was ace 3 suited 4, 6 suited. The flop came 2,4,5 suited giving me a straight flush. In Omaha HI LO this would have been an excellent hand that you dream about. Moving along to more average hand I like 4 cards that will connect and be suited with at least two cards. Too many players depend upon having that all mighty ace but I do not. The best understanding and advice I can give you for playing this game is that if do not make a hand on the FLOP you better fold, I know you hear the old saying you make it on the river but too many times you die on the river and a lots of your chips go down the river. Omaha is a game that makes you think more then hold-em because of so many combination that can be made. Playing Omaha I believe makes you overall a better poker player. I hear players say they hate the game but I think they are really missing out because it will make you a better poker player. As long as I can take money to the BANK------I LOVE OMAHA no matter where it started. Until next time do yourself a favorite and play some Omaha!! HI OR LO it all fun. CONGRATULATIONS to Oasis Tony for winning a Omaha tournment online.

WILD WILD POKER PLAYERS

We all have name tags that we put on poker players and my latest one is the WILD WILD player. The reason I have come to this conclusion is while playing on the internet. The reason you have to be aware of this type of player is that they are very unpredictable. This type of player will put a bluffer to shame and drive a slow player up a wall. Most of the plays that the WILD player will make are never the same and that makes no logical sense ( there is one possible clue is they normally act very fast) so you are unable to get a read on them. This style of playing on the net is very much different then live play and I even use different tactics myself to reach a point that I call BREAK THROUGH, THIS MEANS I HAVE REACH THE AMOUNT OF CHIPS THAT FEEL I CAN START PLAYER REAL POKER. You have to accumulate chips early to survive on the net because the levels are much shorter then in live tournaments. I will usually make most of my moves (chances) either on the button or on the blinds hands these are normally losing hands that I try turn into winning ones. I will say my success rate has been above average since I am ahead of the game money wise but I have won a couple of good ones to put me there. The statements I have made so far applies to NO-LIMIT games. The limit games is the very opposite. I usually wait until the blind are higher to make a move because it is very difficult to run anyone out on $25 and $50 blinds. This seems easy but without patience it is not. Most of my losses is to people using TRAP hands. I have no solution to this except I keep put tags on these player to identify them the next time as what kind of player I am up against. With the large number of player in any one tournament is a real challenge to even the best of players. PS: and there are a lots of good players on the net so make sure you pick on the bad ones. GOOD LUCK!!

Poker Life

"Poker is a mirror of life. Superb knowledge and skill is not enough-- the successful player must be able to ride the waves of luck, and separate bad luck from bad play. Self-awareness and "knowing thyself" is the only weapon the poker player has against the temptation to tilt away hours of hard-earned profit"...Henry Wasserman

I guess the above advice maybe would have gotten me further down on the list instead at 42nd at saturday tournment at the Oasis was not good. But when you become a short stack sometimes you take chances when you should not. Patience is a easy word to say but a difficult one to practice. We will give it another shot monday.

Those little Pocket TENS

Playing at the Oasis in a $30 SAT, we were down to three player. Short stack ($800) went all in and the next player (who was chip leader by 3 chips) went all in also. I had pocket TENs. We had just discussed a chop a couple of hand before but one player objected. My decision was based on this, (If chip leader would knock out short stack maybe we could make a deal since the chips were so close) I folded since I knew that there where or had to be some over cards and maybe even a bigger pair. When the cards were turn over there was three over cards and one under card which was a NINE. The hand was won by the short stack by hitting a NINE on the river. Then I ended up in 3rd when chip leader slow played pocket aces and when three fours hit the board I figured my ACE maybe good but it wasn't and I become history. ( and naturally they chop went I was gone) I was very disappointed because I had played well and made several good bluffs to get where I was. I also was even more upset at myself because I told myself to stay out of those SAT but when you like playing as well as I do what can I say. Better Luck next time. PS: Placed 7th last night in a Omaha HI on the net. MY friend Tony who was knock again (two night in a row) before getting into the money told me I have been playing bad because I go after to many draws. ( that ok I need all the advice I can get) Hey Tony where is your money !!! See All at the OASIS OPEN.

To get you started for more poker news you may want to visit this site. http://tholdem.blogspot.com. Just click on the above Poker Wars and you will be there. You will find some good poker information by Keith Bris. In reviewing myself about this online poker of it short commings and maybe a few pitfalls over all it is a pretty good deal. You can play a lot of poker on a few bucks and the returns is good if you win. The short comming are if you get disconnect from server or the site does and you lose an opportunity to act which may or may not cost you. This has happen to me several times but never has really hurt me and in a few cases it actually help me because if I had the chance to play out the hand I would have lost. If you are new to net poker and you are weary on how to play, go to the PLAY TABLES they are FREE and it will give you the feel of the way poker is played without losing any money. The Big Days Are Coming

Beginning Thursday through Tuesday the poker excitement will begin at the oasis. I hear that they are bringing in 22 tables and that probably will not be enough. It is exciting to have so may other players from different parts of the world that you can exchange ideas and talk about other places. This world we live in today is much smaller then it was when I was growing up. I was born and raised in NC and I thought South Carolina was on the other side of the world but I did know that the earth was round. When I was growing up I also was taught that gambling was bad.. My mother told me never to shoot dice I listen real well because I never touch the dice I just make side bets!!! Playing Cards must be OK because I never was told POKER was bad. I don't know if my parents even knew what poker was. My first poker game was on a ship headed for Korea and that was a long time ago. I don't know why I am writing all this stuff because most of you probably not even interested in what I have to say but that OK it give me something to do when I am not playing poker. There still a couple more chances for WSOP on Paradise Poker.

Last Chance for today

It has been another one of those good poker days. Played on the net in an Omaha Hi game and finished 7th. Play a 4 table yesterday and made it into the money. These 4,5,6 table are nice because they do not wear you out like the big multi especially for an old man like myself. Played some Bingo last night just to break the pace and ended up hitting the bonus ball for $500. Of all the numbers the 43rd number was the charm. Going back to Omaha Hi it is a very exciting game as well as very complicated. The risk of having so many hidden hand that can beat you is unreal. The combination is so much greater then Hold-em. If someone has good advice on how to play this game (or any other game) I would like to hear from you, just click on comment and let the good time roll it all FREE. I wilnever send you a BILL!! That all for now, you all poker players.

Welcome

I hope to be able to share a few things with other poker players as well as they can share with us. I am new at this but hope to learn soon. If my Friend Keith (coach) can do this maybe I can too. Keith and I are having great fun on the net playing poker. This type of poker is a new challenge and at times very demanding becuase the number of players that creates a time comsuming process. I played a 11PM tournment that I finished 13th at 2:35AM. Several of the locals are now on the net and this makes it even more of a challenge to beat a local player. I never believe I would see the day that all of this electronic wonders of today. In the early 70's I sold one of the first PC while as a manager for Tandy Corp. It has been a long road from then to now but it has been a good one. For us senior it probably a good thing becuase many days it is hard to get out and go. I am very pleased with my computer that I had build up in St George at Cobolt computer at 1 N. main st. Tom and Kerry both are great people and they bend over backward to help you. That all this time.
